Trump says he’s firing TVA chairman over executive pay, outsourcing

President Donald Trump said he’s firing the chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority over the compensation package of the public utility’s CEO and moves to outsource IT jobs.

The Associated Press reports Trump told reporters at the White House he was removing the authority’s chair of the board and another member of the board, while threatening to remove other directors if they keep hiring foreign labor.

“Let this serve as a warning to any federally appointed board. If you betray American workers, then you will hear two simple words ‘you’re fired,” Trump said.

The TVA chairman is James “Skip” Thompson of Decatur, Ala., one of four directors Trump appointed in his first year in office.

U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Maryville) in April pushed back against Trump’s attacks on TVA and Lyash.

“Attacking TVA doesn’t do one thing to solve the pandemic and has no place in federal COVID-19 response legislation. TVA does not receive one dollar in federal taxpayer subsidies or federal appropriations,” Alexander said.

The outsourcing of IT jobs became the subject of a TV ad campaign by the U.S. Tech Workers evidently seen by the president, who recently tweeted about the spot.

“Another one of many Fake T.V. ads, this one about the Tennessee Valley Authority, which for years has paid its top executive a ridiculous FORTUNE. Not run by the U.S., but I have long been fighting that crazy ‘salary’ & its policies,” Trump said in the tweet.

The leading Republican candidates for the Senate were quick to praise the president for his moves, though they focused on differing elements. Vanderbilt surgeon Manny Sethi, who has spoken out against TVA compensation since this spring released the following statement:

President Trump was right to take action on the Tennessee Valley Authority. Our public utilities do not need overpaid bureaucrats and executives. I am grateful to see the President take these steps because it will hopefully help TVA move in the right direction- towards transparency and accountability.

Former U.S. Ambassador Bill Hagerty appeared more interested in the foreign workers element:

President Donald Trump is right, we can’t outsource American jobs at a time when our unemployment rate is higher than ever […] Our power grid is an integral component of our nation’s infrastructure and there are significant national security concerns associated with outsourcing any aspect of software or IT management to firms that may be foreign-owned, staffed or otherwise impacted. We need to put the American worker and our national security first.

Too bad he can’t get rid of a few overpaid positions in Tennessee state government!

Yeah, what about the big salary of the person heading that Books from Birth thing that we taxpayers pay for and that communities have to raise the money for but Dolly Parton gets all the crefit for?

The problem with that program is twofold. One, it does something nice for the average Tennessean with a kid, and second, it uses money that could go to prop up whiny small businessmen.

Volunteers do all the real work to raise money for the books for kids, and we taxpayers kick in the rest, but look at who gets the big salaries and the adulation. Newspaper reporters almost never report where that money comes from or who is doing the work.

Also, look at that Brad Paisley store that he and and his wife managed to shove off on the taxpayers to fund while they bask in the glory of uninformed attention on the talk shows. What if every celebrity starts a store? — gah, hold on to your wallets.

So How Many people does this make that he’s fired…..the guy who bragged that, Unlike Obama, he knew how to hire the best and the brightest and didn’t make hiring mistakes.. From his firing stats he must be the Worst Business manager by his own standards. And then there’s the economic saboteurs of Fauci and Birx who he recently created out of whole cloth.

Oh, yeah…..he’s just Great at evaluating the right people for the right job !

Ignorance as usual. Apparently neither Trump nor his supporters here have any idea how much the CEOs of other major electric utilities make or that the TVA is legally mandated to pay competitive compensation.

What a waste of eyes and brain cells. It does not take much of either to constantly whine about Trump, Blackburn, and most other conservatives. You never Trumpers need to move on, help elect Biden, take some sort of sedative, and get some rest.

Eddie, I take a certain joy when Perry and other liberals/leftists show they are humorless, but we conservatives should always strive to be happy warriors. “Warriors” in trying to bring about the future we strive to make for this country yet “happy” insofar as we are prepared to laugh at ourselves and certainly our opponents.

It is UNTHINKABLE that I will do anything other than vote for Trump in November. If I recall, MARLE has indicated that she will vote for Trump as well. I certainly have/will use my powers of persuasion to encourage everyone that I meet to do likewise. From Trump’s own perspective it doesn’t get much better than that. He is certainly aware that his appeal as a person is narrow but deep.

Trump is a laughable character to many. That doesn’t make them “Never Trumpers,” by any stretch of the imagination. People who fully intend to vote for Trump are not “Never Trumpers” by definition don’t you agree?

Eddie is a lost cause. He can’t read and he has no memory. I have never voted D for president in my life and I am 71. I have said that repeatedly. You don’t have to be in the sheeple herd to vote against a senile Biden. But for Eddie if you point out anything, even anything true, you’re a never-Trumper. How can someone who voted for him which I have mentioned numerous times be a NEVER trumper?

  • I fear there is a real possibility of losing the Presidency and the Senate. A real fear

Beth Harwell’s appointment was just a few months ago by the President. I have known her for over 40 years and she is hard working, intelligent, and honest. She will be a great asset to TVA and to the Tennessee rate payers. I am even a Democrat and support her. Honesty is important!
