After months of professed indecision, Republican U.S. Rep. Phil Roe announced Thursday he will run for reelection to a sixth term representing Tennessee’s 1st Congressional District.
Trio mentioned as possible candidates to succeed Roe demur — at least for now
The Johnson City Press contacted state Reps. David Hawk and Matthew Hill, along with Washington County Mayor Dan Eldridge, after their names were mentioned in a Washington report as prospective candidates for the 1st Congressional District seat, should incumbent U.S. Rep. Phil Roe decide not to seek reelection. Perhaps predictably, the newspaper reports none of them said yes to a run at this point; but they didn’t give an absolute no, either.

U.S. Rep. Phil Roe said in Washington Monday that he will decide in the “next week or so” whether to run for a sixth term, reports Roll Call, adding that there’s already some speculation underway on who might run to replace him. Names dropped include two state representatives and Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten.
Roe tried to resuscitate train wreck victim
Rep. Phil Roe suspected it was already too late to save the young man lying near the wreckage of a train-truck collision this week, but he began to administer CPR anyway, reports the News Sentinel.
A retired physician, Roe continued working with the patient until EMTs arrive. But his first impression had been right.
The man, Christopher Foley, 28, of Louisa County, Va., had died when the garbage truck in which he was a passenger was struck by an Amtrak train carrying Roe and other Republican members of Congress to a retreat in West Virginia.
“It was really frustrating to not be able to do anything for this man,” Roe recalled Thursday.
To Foley’s family, Roe sends this message: “I don’t think he suffered at all. I think (death) was instantaneous.”
Fleischmann slightly injured in train wreck; Kustoff and Roe aboard but unharmed
U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann was slightly injured Wednesday when a train carrying Republican congressmen to an event in West Virginia hit a garbage truck. Two other Tennessee Republican congressmen—Reps. David Kustoff and Phil Roe – were aboard but not injured in the mishap.
Roe still remains undecided about reelection run
U.S. Rep. Phil Roe says he still hasn’t decided whether to seek reelection to another term in Tennessee’s 1st Congressional District and that pending medical tests will have an impact on his decision along with his work load and a desire to get some things done to help veterans, reports the Kingsport Times News.
When asked by the Times News during a Friday conference call with reporters whether he would run for re-election, Roe responded:
“I have not … from a health standpoint … I’ve had a CT (computer tomography) scan, which was normal. I’m very pleased about that. … In another three to four weeks, I’ll have a blood test to see whether that’s normal and OK. Those things will impact the decision you make. So far, I’ve gotten great results. Physically I’m feeling better. … There are some things I have for the VA (Veterans Administration) that are critical that I’ve got to get done. … All of these are weighing on my decision and it’s going to be coming rather quickly. … I have a national platform now. … a chairmanship has added a lot of extra work.”
Note: In a post dated Jan. 3, Roe was quoted as saying he would decide “in the next week to 10 days.”

Citing ‘Trump fatigue,’ Democratic doctor plans run for Congress against Republican Dr. Phil Roe
Dr. Martin Olsen, an East Tennessee State University ObGyn professor and medical practitioner, says he intends to run for the Democratic nomination to the 1st Congressional District seat now held by Republican U.S. Rep. Phil Roe, also a physician, reports the Johnson City Press.
“I think I can win,” Olsen said rather earnestly. “Now, am I an underdog? Well, yes, I am an underdog. There’s no doubt about that. But the path to victory is to get about one-third of the (Donald) Trump voters. I think there’s enough Trump fatigue that it’s legitimate.”
