Speakers form study committee on refugee issues

House Speaker Cameron Sexton and Senate Speaker Randy McNally are assembling joint study committee on refugee issues.

“The Tennessee General Assembly filed suit against the federal government five years ago on refugee settlement,” said McNally (omitting that the lawsuit failed in federal district and appeals courts). “With this study committee, we reaffirm that there is a clear and compelling state interest in a sane immigration policy.”

“We must have transparency to address the concerns raised by both members of the General Assembly and Tennesseans,” said Sexton. “I am in agreement with Gov. Lee not to accept any unaccompanied migrant children.”

The panel is entirely Republican: Reps. Dan Howell of Cleveland, Bruce Griffey of Paris, Ryan Williams of Cookeville, Scotty Campbell of Mountain City, and Chris Todd of Jackson, along with Sens. Dawn White of Murfreesboro, Bo Watson of Hixson, Todd Gardenhire of Chattanooga, Richard Briggs of Knoxville, and Ed Jackson of Jackson.

Here’s the letter the speakers sent to House and Senate clerks:

Dear Ms. Clerk and Mr. Clerk,

As Speakers of the Senate and House of Representatives of the 112th General Assembly, we hereby create a Study Committee on Refugee Issues to evaluate the number of migrant children being permanently relocated to Tennessee by the federal government, the number of migrant children being flown into Tennessee and then relocated to other states by the federal government, how to increase transparency from the federal government regarding its relocation of unaccompanied migrant children to and through Tennessee, and the impact, financial and beyond, on Tennesseans, as it relates to the federal government’s migrant relocation program. 

House members appointed to the committee are: Representative Howell (Chair), Representative Griffey, Representative Williams, Representative Campbell, and Representative Todd.

Senate members appointed to the committee are:  Senator White (Chair), Senator Watson, Senator Gardenhire, Senator Briggs, Senator Jackson.

            So, I take it you will be voting AGAINST Bill Lee in the primary? I think you should take a look at Glen Jacobs who is likely running against Lee. If not him, perhaps Andy Ogles. Both mayors fought Bill Lee’s unconstitutional shut-down orders. They would be a true partner with President Trump.

    Not much we can do since immigration is a federal matter and the Rt. Rev. Gov. Bill Lee felt it was his religious duty to NOT do what he could to foreclose illegal aliens from coming into this state. The only thing to do is do whatever we can to make Tenneessee as inhospitable to these illegals whatever their age who the Democrats are importing in order to eventually “fundamentally change” the electorate of America.

      I don’t blame you for being outraged of course, the vast majority of Americans are outraged as well but a good chunk of them are suckers for other parts of the Democrats program probably promising them “free” stuff. I think the way the feds get away with this is that these illegals are said to be “seeking asylum” when they clearly don’t qualify for asylum. The trick is to massively underfund the entire border security operation so when a chunk of the 50 million Central Americans and their kids rush the border and simply claim asylum they are caught they are given some nonsense about coming back sometime in the future for their hearing as to their eligibility for asylum, but of course, they never come back and melt into the country just as the leftists intended.

      The only way to stop this is for the American people to rise up and go to the polls and elect conservative Republicans who are at least rhetorically willing to stop this and demand that they follow through. Of course, that will entail less of an apatite by more Americans for “free” stuff. Americans haven’t consistently voted that way so far. That’s why Ann Coulter wrote her best selling book “Adios America.”

        Another election season coming up in 2022 MARLE and hope springs once again that we can have you take a break from your role as Madame “NO” and, for what will be perhaps the first time, actually endorse a candidate. “None of the Above” for every office doesn’t work for someone will govern and I anxiously wait to see who you will finally ENTHUSIASTICALLY endorse.

        As for me whatever gave you the idea I endorse lying? I simply vote for the most conservative candidates as determined by their record and hope for the best. If they don’t perform as advertised I simply choose someone else the next time they are up for election. That’s the way democracy works. I simply find continuous complaining about this or that unproductive. Once an election is held and the winner is declared take about a month off and look to the next election.

          Politicians have no obligation to correct the misstatements or “lies” of the head of their own party, few people expect them to do so and almost no politician does so, certainly not on a regular basis.             There’s an election coming up in 2022 and there won’t be 330 million choices as to who is going to be elected, rather the choice will be between those few who run in the primaries and even fewer who actually are nominated by the two major parties. The way to have any effect on government is to choose the best between those individuals who run and are nominated. That’s how the game is played productively. Sitting back and whining about the inadequacies and faults about those running without ever expressing any enthusiasm or rarely even tepid support for anyone might give one some odd sense of satisfaction but not one I can share or even understand.

            Lying works as you have pointed out. And when there is total acceptance to the point of saying it’s ok B/C it works then you have the situation you just described. A horrible choice.

            And unlike the “read my lips” pushback at the polls, whereby citizen voters punished the Liar those same citizen voters are being encouraged, by you, to accept the behavior and vote for them anyway.

            But it hasn’t taught Stuart anything about what is expected. Finally with Trump and his constant lying off center stage (thank you twitter and FB) maybe Republicans can win back the House in 2022 and not lose ground in the Senate. Perhaps those who Bailed on Trump (the White Educated Suburban Executive MALES ) will return to vote in 2024.

            By the way those white educated males voted for Rep in House and Senate seats in 2020 and we would have held the Senate except for Trump’s temper tantrum antics in the 3 months preceding the Jan Runoffs in GA.

The nine people shot and killed in the mass shooting the other day were mostly hard working immigrants of Indian descent, they had nice jobs, nice houses, great families and worked very hard every day supporting their community and families. It is not the immigrants that are making trouble, it is our own home grown political nut jobs with plenty of weapons. That is what needs to stop – the massive flooding of weapons of every sort in our communities. The hatred of foreigners is something that is just disgusting to anyone that has traveled or lived overseas and lived and mingled with and among the world’s citizens. Yes, there are some bad people out there but the majority are wonderful hard working people that simply want to get ahead by working hard. The US, in the eyes of the world, has been falling and failing ever since the “trump effect.”

        The US welcomes more immigrants than any other country on earth. And that has been true for ever. The US has taken in 51 Million immigrants and the next closest country has taken 13 Million. No one comes close.

        20% of all the migrants in the world have come Here; 5% or less have gone ot any other single nation.

        What is Not healthy for a country is to accept migrants who will start out with an average 9th grade education in a Very Sophisticated economy. In past immigration surges we were an Agricultural economy and one where unskilled labor could be accommodated. That’s not the case now.

        And it’s not healthy to have a dominant country, culture and language Dominate your immigration population. 1/4 of all of our immigrants are from Mexico. The country with the next highest representation has less than 5%. We have 5X as many people from just one country and that has Never in our history been viewed as a healthy immigration situation.

        EDUCATION LEVELS of immigrants to the US:
        Those from Asia ~ 52% have a bachelor’s degree of Higher
        Those from Europe~ 42% have a ” ”
        Those from Mexico~ 6% have a bachelor’s degree of higher; 81% have a high school ed or LESS

        Those with little education, no language fluency, little experience with or appreciation of life with complicated rules, laws, regulations are going to be struggling and wards of the taxpayer (and by the way those with this level of education are paying ZERO in Federal Income Taxes).

    “opt in or opt out, the Feds have the authority.” Actually, the courts have shown that the feds do not always have the right to run a federal program and push the costs on to the state if the state does not want that federal program. That is the basis for some states’ refusal to accept Medicaid expansion. Tennessee could also do what the Gov of SC is doing and pull the license of ORR-contracting non-profits participating in certain aspects of the unaccompanied children resettlement program.

      ..Tennessee withdrew from the refugee resettlement program in 2008 after the federal government refused to cover state costs as was originally promised in the 1980 Refugee Act. The federal government then simply appointed Catholic Charities of Tennessee to continue the program while still “forcing the state to pay for it.”
      I doubt the Federal Government cares about a State license.

    The Tennessee legislature can pass a mandatory E-Verify bill covering all employers, yet year after year after year, the Republicans have refused to do it. You cannot demagnetize your state to illegal labor/immigration without mandatory E-Verify. The Republicans are liars and poseurs on the immigration issue.         Since Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles’s name keeps getting boosted in Franklin and Nashville, ha, I’ll include below part of a letter I sent to the Columbia newspaper. Unlike Ogles, who misled voters, I am actually from Maury County (Columbia), by the way. Ogles won the mayoral election with about 37 percent in a 3-way split of the vote. We have seen that these 3-way splits keep real conservatives from winning. In that mayoral election, none of the options were great, however. I voted for the incumbent, who was supposed to be the Republican nominee but got stood up by the party, which backed Ogles, who had been living in Maury County less than 2 years.

        Since Andy Ogles is a former Tennessee director for the Koch family’s Americans for Prosperity, I would like to note that this organization advocates amnesty for illegal aliens and big increases of imported labor, and exists for the interests of the profiteers from mass legal and illegal immigration. The Koch network, including Americans for Prosperity, has aligned itself with the left on immigration and essentially calls for unfettered immigration.

        Ogles isn’t the only one in masquerade. Google any Republican and Americans for Prosperity and see what you come up with. Mark Green, for one, Stuart. Same with Club for Growth, Associated Builders and Contractors, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the whole nation-destroying bunch.

        By the way, E-Verify can be used only on new hires, not existing workers, so the illegal labor your Republicans and Democrats have lured here are here to stay. And it continues. The Republicans will make noise for the cameras and form committees of distraction and will do nothing useful.

        And remember, the Democrats deserted the American working class a long time ago. No one represents American workers now.

          The Republican Party is run by the profiteers from mass immigration and illegal labor. The party picks its nominee in a race, and the other candidates, who may be far more conservative, end up running as independents or something else. Voters in my county are looking for the R on the ballot. They don’t know what else to do. They may know nothing about the R candidate, but they go with that and get fooled again.

          An exception: We’ve been lucky with our congressman Scott DesJarlais. He has done what he said he would do.

            Sadly what you say is true Donna. Our elections cost a lot of money and not enough conservatives contribute enough to make candidates viable relying solely on financial support from conservatives so the cheap labor/big tech crowd can bribe Republicans to vote for, or fail to vote against, what will lead to their party’s and ultimately this country’s destruction. The only avenue for this to change is in Republican Primaries where conservatives should concentrate their efforts to move the Republican Party RIGHTWARD, etc. etc.

            Andy Ogles’ leadership of the libertarian (i.e. open borders) Americans For Prosperity should make him a rich target for attacks from well financed opponents in any Republican Primary. Of course that organization supports free market capitalism/small government besides immigration and perhaps Andy has a good answer to attacks against him regarding immigration. We should hear him out but that issue certainly makes him vulnerable.

            Of course, earlier generations of Americans would never have put up with the madness that is going on in this country with immigration, and other aspects of Cultural Marxism that has so intoxicated the ruling class of the western world. Those of us who have watched the slow, now accelerating, deterioration of our society can’t help but think maybe the American people are simply no longer up to maintaining the country we were lucky enough to receive as an inheritance.

            Well, in Maury County, since the 1980s, we’ve been taken over by a grifter corporation, GM, and its tens of thousands of transplants, whom native Maury Countians have subsidized in many ways while their own offspring had to leave the county to find a job.

            We’ve had a lot of people to come into our county and use us to benefit their own agendas and bank accounts. Andy Ogles is just one more.

            The employers of illegal aliens can sponsor them for U.S. citizenship. That is one of several ways that illegal aliens slip into citizenship here. Amnesty happens every day in these ways. So the illegal labor you lured here through action and inaction is voting and will be voting against you suckers, if you are one of the millions of American suckers.

            I’ve mentioned this over the years, but for 25 years I’ve partnered with Latino and Asian immigrants, now U.S. citizens, who understand what is happening and have spoken out and voted for immigration control. One of them is related to me. The others found me by way of the Internet. They told me their stories and what was happening in their states.

            I never dreamed we would still be fighting these battles all these years later.

            Marle, the chemical plants and sewing factories in Maury County closed. Those were our main employers. Saturn/GM came in about that time and promised most of their thousands of jobs would go to locals. GM lied. They brought in their own workers from other states. They employed only a few locals. Real estate speculation sent housing prices to the stratosphere in this rural county. Not only were the jobs gone, but many locals couldn’t afford to live here anymore.

            I understand that locals didn’t get the Additional jobs that came into the county at levels promised. But those jobs didn’t exist Before GM arrive so there wasn’t a net loss of jobs for Offsrping.

            And indeed housing cost may have risen but that doesn’t make jobs disappear. In fact it supports jobs in construction, RE sales, furnishing and maintaining homes, legal services, Restaurants hotels etc, etc.

            I was just trying to understand how once plentiful jobs before for offspring disappeared with the arrival of GM

            1. Why would you expect GM to hire a bunch of sewing machine workers? I’m sure there were programs at the Maury County vocational school. How many took advantage of the opportunity vs. how many just want a handout and to blame not immediately getting a job on Mexicans.

            2. Many offspring (or sex trophies) grow up to not want to live in the towns their Boomer parents screwed up. I bet Donna’s crotch goblins in Georgia are glad they have a few hours between them now.

            Our county leaders sold the locals on Saturn/GM as a replacement for jobs that were gone or leaving. These were to be jobs with benefits that would support a family. Like the old chemical plant jobs. Not like restaurants. Many of the construction jobs were going to immigrants and illegal aliens in the 1990s and on. Owners were often from out of county, but some here did okay.

            Many people here saw health care, selling real estate, and teaching as the only sustaining options left, and population growth sparked growth in those areas. The locals found themselves competing with GM family members for non-GM jobs. Spouses, parents, siblings, grown children of the transplants. This was one of the first things I noticed when I moved back here. The GM extended family members were here and demanding jobs in the banks and at Lowe’s and everywhere else that was left for the locals. The local working class suffered and is still suffering.

            GM, the hospital, and Farm Bureau are the main employers here now, I guess.

            One of my female cousins worked in a sewing factory that closed. She got a temporary job of a few weeks at GM and said it was the easiest job she ever had. She now works in a grocery store. The people working at GM are not rocket scientists, and the big sell from GM was that they would train and employ mostly locals. They lied, and one of their union leaders wrote a regular column for our newspaper and said exactly that. They lied. And were never held accountable.

      And on the refugee matter….how many of those coaching illegals on what to say, in many cases encouraging the commission of fraud, (we see that 90% of cases are rejected) have been prosecuted?
      I saw one interview recently where the family just crossing the border said that they were fleeing Nicaragua because the son had been shot by police!!! REally? You left Nicaragua and illegally came to the US to avoid police shootings? And we’re going to let that excuse stand?

    On Thursday, a federal appeals court issued an injunction against prioritizing COVID relief to restaurants based on the establishment owners’ race and sex, finding that it was unconstitutionally discriminatory. The ruling involved the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, a $28.6 billion program in the COVID relief law President Biden signed in March. The law requires the Small Business Administration to give priority to restaurants owned by certain minorities and women, while bumping white males and other minorities to the back of the line.

    The court has decided that showing favoritism to small restaurants at least “51 percent owned and controlled by women, veterans, or the ‘socially and economically disadvantaged’” is a violation of the 14th Constitutional Amendment equal-protection clause. According to the Constitution, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

    The ruling was in response to a lawsuit brought by the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty on behalf of Antonio Vitolo, a white Tennessee restaurant owner, whose application for relief was not being processed until minority and female applications were fulfilled. After a trial judge denied his request for an injunction, he appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which granted him an injunction in a 2-to-1 vote.

    The study committee’s ‘going in position’ needs to be that these unaccompanied minors are entering our nation and state of Tennessee illegally, and by referring to them as refugees without any known effort to qualify the individuals as refugees is inaccurate.

    Regarding the study committee’s appointed lawmakers – it appears that Sen. Todd Gardenhire’s inclusion is meant to provide advocacy for the illegal aliens, unless he has had a turnabout on illegals.

    Recall that Sen. Gardenhire sponsored in 2018 Gov. Bill Haslam’s legislation (SB2263/HB2429) called “Tuition Opportunity” which would grant in-state tuition discount benefits to illegal alien students. An intense effort to pass this bill into law by Haslam, Gardenhire, and Rep. Mark White included having 100 illegal alien students rallying on the TN Capitol steps, and urging them to lobby lawmakers.

    The legislation failed by one vote in the House Education Committee in 2018, which was one of several efforts running the bill by lawmakers to provide state benefits to illegals at a cost to taxpayers. We will watch with interest the work of the “Study Committee on Refugee Issues.”

      All people entering the United States without proper documentation are entering ILLEGALLY. They are detained during which time they are “counseled” ( I call it coached) and then POOF~ they have declared refugee status. Coaches such as Catholic Charities ( btw I AM Catholic) are helping them say the things that will move them from “illegal” to refugee”. It seems that fleeing police violence or gang violence in their home country BUT coming to America where we have riots in the streets over police violence against black and brown people and neighborhoods controlled by gangs isn’t regarded as an absurdly flimsy excuse.

      A court hearing at a later date will approve or deny this assertion, IF they show up for the hearing. In the meantime they are now called Refugees and end up wherever the Federal Government and States say they will live. It seems sort of like innocent until proven guilty. Refugee until status is denied. The overwhelming majority are denied.

      On election day in the general election it boils down to a choice between two candidates and the voters pick between the two. You may be obsessed with that part of Marsha’s “platform” but frankly I don’t remember it being an issue in the campaign let alone the reason a majority of people voted for Marsha. To then conclude that the fact that Marsha won means that the majority of Tennesseans supported her position on that one issue is absurd. You’re simply Madame “NO” and Marsha (Heritage-87%) is one of the 97% of the Republican Party who you don’t like so her stand on repatriating illegals is a stick with which you like to beat her at the slightest provocation.

        There’s a difference between an objection being raised and not voting for someone.

        When there is NO pushback on something as detrimental to our society as the flagrant violation of our borders then the Party and the Candidate are both a problem. Not one person in leadership in TN spoke against her position. NOT ONE. Nor did I hear that any donors had a problem with this position. I heard no Conservative Talk Radio or news outlet have a problem with it.

        That sounds pretty much like Adherence to the policy across multiple voices with platforms and microphones.

            The desire to subject a campaign slogan to serious analysis is not intellectual curiosity, rather it’s micro-analysis and a misallocation of time due to a failure to prioritize the important things in politics. For example, I choose candidates based on their record prior to the election at hand. I certainly do not choose them based on the campaign slogans created by their hired campaign hands.

          Is the Constitution Party (“CP”) still around? I remember voting CP when I didn’t vote for McCain and the second terms of “Lips” and “Uniter” Bush but rather than gain a place on the ballot as I expected the CP has sunk into further obscurity so that one has to do research as to which “Independent” is actually a candidate of the CP. In short, James, that doesn’t seem to me to be a very CONSTRUCTIVE suggestion.

            But it’s too late for Republicans. The Lincoln Project types will either force Trump to create his Patriot Party or they will finally break off the GQP and give it all to Trump. Either way, the GQP will likely become a 30% minority party on a national level. Meanwhile, Dems will likely grow their 55% majority because (1) Trump will win the GQP Civil War and (2) the Lincoln Project types aren’t going third party. They will join the Dems while you all pretend AOC actually has power and cry yourself to sleep watching Tucker.
