Republican Rep. McManus loses in House District 96

Contrary to a statewide trend, Democrat Dwayne Thompson defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Steve McManus of Cordova in House District 96, according to final, unofficial returns in the suburban Shelby County seat.

The final results show Thompson, who had focused on support for Gov. Bill Haslam’s Insure Tennessee proposal during his campaign, with 14,105 votes to 13,754 for McManus.

That means that Republicans had a net gain of one seat in the state House of Representatives, making the Supermajority total 74 seats with 25 Democrats. The last legislative session began with Republicans holding a 73-26 majority.

Republicans won two seats previously held by Democrats.
