Republican, Democrat announce runs at DesJarlais in 2018

A Cleveland businessman has declared as a candidate against U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais in the 4th Congressional District Republican primary while a Rutherford County school teacher has announced as a Democratic candidate for the seat.

From the Cleveland Daily Banner on the GOP challenger:

Jack Maddux, a Cleveland businessman who is a U.S. Navy veteran and a former Chattanooga police officer, has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 4th District U.S. Congress seat.

Maddux is a 1983 graduate of Bradley Central High School and graduated summa cum laude from Bryan College in Dayton.

“I want to make a difference,” Maddux said. “I’m not your typical politician. I’m a middle class guy with humble upbringings.”

….“I don’t like the direction things have taken over the last six years,” he said. “Our current congressman has a decent voting record, but he’s not a man of action. He has not passed any bills. He has never gotten a bill passed in a committee. I believe our area needs a strong leader.”

Maddux said he is very “pro-life,” believing that life begins at conception.

“I don’t waver on that,” he said.

From Nashville Post Politics on the Democratic candidate:

Mariah Phillips is a recent graduate of Emerge Tennessee, a new campaign training program for Democratic women, which launched in the state in the wake of Donald Trump’s surprising presidential victory last year.

Phillips announced her intention to run in a Facebook post earlier this month and submitted paperwork to the Federal Elections Commission this week.

Yesterday, my representative in Congress voted to pass a bill that will hurt many Tennessee families,” Phillips wrote the day after DesJarlais’ vote in favor of the American Health Care Act repealing Barack Obama’s signature Affordable Care Act. “As a citizen, mother, Christian and a teacher, I am devastated, not only because of the effects that my own family will endure, but the millions who will lose their healthcare and preventative care and the benefits of Medicaid assistance to children with disabilities.”

When reached by the Post, Phillips said she was organizing her campaign team but declined to comment further…. Just last year, Phillips welcomed DesJarlais to her classroom at Daniel McKee Alternative School; the congressman was sponsoring some of Phillips’ students participating in a stock market simulation. The two were pictured together in the Daily News Journal.

Not merely “a decent voting record” Mr. Maddux but a spectacularly wonderful voting record! The Heritage Foundation gives Scott a current score of 93 out of 100 which makes him the best in class in the Tennessee delegation. Scott is also the only Tennessean in Congress who is a member of the House Freedom Caucus. Please Mr. Maddux, don’t make us spend money supporting a jewel like Scott DesJarlais when there are so many liberals who need retiring.

As for Mariah Phillips running as a Tennessee Democrat outside of the safe confines of Nashville and Memphis, I hope she enjoys her fifteen minutes of fame.

    Please Mr. Madd

    For Ms. Phillips,
Your assessment of the American Healthcare Act are the talking points of the ignorant. As a teacher, I must believe you understand the ACA was poor policy to the Republic. Unless of course, you are on the march in step with the socialist progressives who hope to see a one payer system. And, if this, in fact, could be true I recommend further study of the type of government you are planning on running for.

    Rev. George Brooks says:

I am strongly considering a run for the District 4 Congressional seat in 2018. And as a Democrat, who is feed up with both the Democratic and Republican parties, I will NOT be bought and controlled by either party, and will most likely become an Independent, who will NOT accept ANY benefits or money from ANY folks hanging around the Capitol, buying up members of Congress. And will be strongly supportive of the best of health care for EVERY American, just as members of Congress have. AND will be totally opposed to American taxpayers money going out of this country to support all of the other countries that we now support, INCLUDING ISRAEL. And, AGAIN, I will NOT be a slave to any party or the RICH. Scott DesJarlais MUST be defeated and removed from Congress. — Rev. George Brooks of Murfreesboro, TN.
