Poll: Trump approval in TN higher than Alexander or Corker; lower than Haslam

President Trump’s approval rating in Tennessee stands at 56 percent, according to polling focused on Southern states and reported by NBC News. That’s higher than favorablity ratings for U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker; lower than for Gov. Bill Haslam.

Trump had a 56 percent approval rating versus 42 percent disapproval in the state. Corker’s approval was 48 percent with a 47 percent negative rating. Alexander was 53 percent approval, 41 percent negative. And Haslam came in at 67 percent net approval; 30 percent disapproval.

Those results are a bit different from another survey released today by Morning Consult on popularity of all U.S. senators and governors. Corker’s job performance there is approved by 42 percent with 37 percent disapproving and Alexander has 45 percent approval, 32 percent disapproval. Haslam gets 57 percent positive/24 percent negative. (The Morning Consult governor ratings HERE; Senate ratings HERE.)

The NBC News/Survey Monkey polling had a pretty high sample (1,710 in Tennessee) and covered multiple topics. The overview story is HERE. Excerpt from the Tennessee-specific portion:

Retiring Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican and frequent Trump critic, is barely above water in his home state. Forty-eight percent approve of him, while 47 percent disapprove.

That’s notably weaker than the support enjoyed by his fellow Republicans, Sen. Lamar Alexander and Gov. Bill Haslam, whose approval ratings outstrip their disapproval ratings by double digits.

Former Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, is running to replace Corker, and was ahead in a recent poll, but his party affiliation will probably be a drag. Just a third of Tennesseans said they would vote for a Democratic candidate this year, while half said they would vote Republican; 14 percent said they wouldn’t vote at all.

Some of the other results from the NBC/Survey Monkey polling in Tennessee:

-61 percent said undocumented immigrants should be offered a chance to apply for legal status.

-47 percent said they support same-sex marriage while 49 percent did not.

-28 percent said they support removal of Confederate monuments and statues from public places; 70 percent said they do not.
