A Republican bill aiming to protect users’ privacy online strikes all the right chords with people tired of having their personal information harvested and sold to third party vendors. But the devil, as always, is in the details.

A bill sponsored by Rep. Johnny Garrett (R-Goodlettsville) and Sen. Mike Bell (R-Riceville) originally dealt with with campaign finance disclosures for corporations. But it opened 14 titles of the Tennessee Code — a classic caption bill that the serve as a vehicle for a wide variety of initiatives.

The amendment now circulating would set privacy requirements that could have far-reaching effects on a variety of businesses. There’s already talk of the measure becoming this year’s Lobbyist Full Employment Act.

    Instead of trying to REGULATE the world businesses , why don’t they just stick to what they can regulate, the state’s government. Why not just say that NO state or county or city or municipality government or employee may obtain any information on a private citizen by ANY means without a warrant that identifies the person, the information or data that is to be searched and what will happen with that information after the facts are determined.

      James, how in the world would we function safely without the Patriot Act?

        “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

        The USA Patriot Act could be used to target law-abiding gun owners. Section 206 of the Act allows “John Doe” roving wiretaps, which authorize wide searches of people without even providing the name of the target to a court.
        •Expanded definition of wiretapping to include computer and wireless tapping;
        •National Security Letters;
        •Extending the duration of after-thefact warrants for wiretapping or searches of foreign intelligence or terror suspect targets under FISA courts from 45 days to 120 days;
        •A sneak-and-peek provision allowing the federal government not to notify a target of investigation that their house or property has been searched;
        •A “business records” search provision that allows the federal government to place equipment at communications providers that allow it to wiretap at will and to take “any tangible thing” from a business related to an investigation, along with a provision that prohibits the businesses from announcing publicly they were wiretapped or searched (the gag order part was declared unconstitutional by U.S. courts);
        •Increased authority for pen registers and other wiretap devices in communications
        and electronic devices.

        IF the US would stop sending troops to every country. If the US would stop bombing countries that have done Nothing to US. If the US would bring All the troops home from Every country and End All foreign aid to Every country, Then we would be safer.
        The Patriot Act (which was written before 9/11) just helps our enemies in our own government help our real enemies.

    We need to convert to a unicameral legislature that meets every other year. That will save money and cut down on the shenanigans. Streamline government, as some people say.

    I wonder how many lobbyists per legislator? Wonder how much legislators make v lobbyists? That would make a great article

      Then write it. Lobbyists are registered and legislator salary is public record. Interview some lobbyists for salary information or use a public database like Glassdoor.

      Calculate your statistics and then write your “great article” that nobody will read.

    It still is surprising how many times we see photos of our “Legislature at Work” and see so many of them NOT wearing masks. So many people displaying collective stupidity while they debate making laws for OTHER people to follow!

      Leftist hooligans are tearing down statues that they don’t care for so we have quite a few empty pedestals in leftist communities. I think that some left-wing governments with an empty pedestal in their jurisdiction should commission some sculptor to sculpt a giant mask as a sort of religious icon for leftists to worship.

        He mocks masks just as Mar-A-Lago closes down from the same stupidity, they just won’t learn so they will suffer the consequences. It is just too bad they can’t keep the suffering to themselves, they always have to include so many innocent people in their twisted “Freedom Foolishness.”

          Don’t worry there’s plenty of Federal dollars available to help those who are affected by other folks “freedom” to spread Covid. Why Donald himself contributed $750 in income tax. That should pay for the first 5 minutes of one person’s hospitalization.

    Late this afternoon Florida announced that it had passed 2 Million cases of Covid-19 Virus. Florida joins Texas and CA. as the only three states to pass 2 Million cases. Gotta love those spring breakers chasing that Freedom while, obviously, no adults are in charge. The cost of that Freedom is unknowingly being spread to many others by neglect. It is just selfish but that is the conservative way!

    FL Gov just declared an emergency in the state as Spring Break crowds are out of control in Miami Beach practicing spreading the Covid virus as fast as they can. New cases are exploding with only republicans in charge and the Gov. announced that he might just run for president. After all if trump could run the country and handle the pandemic so well at the same time, why couldn’t he do the same?

    Closing Mar a Lago over a hoax???? WHO does that in a state that boasts it’s 100% open for business?
