Lee names Mathews interim commissioner of Human Services Department

Gov. Bill Lee has named Tony Mathews as the interim commissioner of the state Human Services Department. He takes over from Danielle Barnes, who has left state government for the private sector.

“Tony Mathews has served the Department of Human Services well and I thank him for his willingness to take on this important role,” Lee said in a statement. “Human Services provides critical programs to Tennessee families in need and we’re committed to maintaining an excellent standard of customer service during this transition period.”

Mathews has served as the agency’s deputy commissioner and chief operating officer since May 2017. He previously worked for private health insurance companies Aetna and Cigna after stints with TennCare and the Department of Environment and Conservation.

Any hope that he will throttle the Gov to convince him to expand Medicaid?

After the voters of Tennessee just ratified Republican super majorities in the General Assembly and elected a Senator who will surely be at least 20% more conservative than his predecessor and a new Congressman who may be 15% more conservative than her predecessor why on earth should Lee have appointed someone to suggest expanding the welfare state here in Tennessee? In other words, “Kathy, happily no hope whatsoever”!

Now if it concerned corporate welfare, the Governor and his cronies would be all over it. As for Medicare, that helps the little guy, no way that’s going to happen.

Prosperous states create an environment that attracts productive citizens and the companies where many of them work. Tennessee needn’t go out of its way to create an environment that attracts unproductive citizens. That’s simply common sense Cannoneer.

And besides Kathy didn’t mention Medicare; she said Medicaid. Big difference…..Perhaps you think they are one and the same or so similar as to have no real difference. Educate yourself!

Expanding Medicaid is the most noble thing this Governor can do. People are dying at an alarmin rate and there is SO much money out there. It is truly pathetic

They are also spending money on recreational drugs, tattoos, etc at a fast clip. Buy insurance instead of more ink on your body.

The problem is that so many republican governors have spread this trump lie that the virus isn’t real and it will be gone soon. Now they are learning that trump lied and people are dying at rapid paces and it is not going to end without widespread public cooperation. The number one thing the public can do is stay home and wear a mask if you have to go out but our misguided governors have already convinced a large number of the population that this virus is some Democratic hoax and the people want to continue to be “free” and continue to infect others in their group of family & friends. The republicans should have told the truth to the public from the start. The president and congress knew from the start what was going to happen. They had enough time to sell all their stocks but didn’t have enough time to warn their constituents. NOW they act like they care about the public.
