Henderson County mayor seeks House District 72 seat (now held by retiring Rep. McDaniel)

Henderson County Mayor Dan Hughes has launched a campaign for the Republican nomination in House District 72, where veteran Rep. Steve McDaniel has announced he won’t seek reelection, reports the Jackson Sun. The district covers Chester, Decatur, Henderson and Perry counties.

“I’m running for state representative to meet the challenges of rural Tennesseans,” Hughes said.  “Unemployment is at an all-time low in many of our communities, but we face the challenges of underemployment and scores of Tennesseans working two jobs to make ends meet.  I want to take my experience in local government to Nashville and work with state leaders to make sure rural communities are not left behind.”

…Hughes, 63, is serving his second term as Henderson County mayor.  He previously spent 29 years in broadcasting at WZLT/WBFG in Lexington.

… Hughes also recognized McDaniel.  “Steve McDaniel is dedicated to rural Tennesseans,” Hughes said in the press release. “He has fought for us every day in Nashville. Steve is leaving some really big shoes to fill.”
