Tennessee congressional delegation recoils at Capitol incursion

U.S. Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Nashville), who called for active duty troops to be activated to quell social unrest during last year’s campaign, is denouncing the breach of the U.S. Capitol by demonstrators supporting President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his electoral loss.

“What is happening at the U.S. Capitol right now is not peaceful, this is violence,” Hagerty said in a tweet. “I condemn it in the strongest terms. We are a nation of laws and this must stop.”

Fellow Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Brentwood) soon followed suit:

Other members of the Tennessee delegation have also been tweeting about the events:

The destructive mayhem in Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, et al were “Mostly Peaceful Protests” according to the Mainstream Media so what happened today which was much less violent and destructive has to be a “Mostly Peaceful Protest” don’t you think? Or have words in the English language completely lost their meaning?

Stuart, your cognitive difficulties are surfacing again. A peaceful protest does indeed differ from a riot that results in unlawful entry into the Capitol and disruption of a Constitutional process.

            Stuart I. Anderson says:

Ah Jonathan, I’m sure it’s inadvertent, but you have stumbled on the nub of it. What was labeled as a “Mostly Peaceful Protest” (“MPPs”) for the past six months over and over again were riots yet according to the Mainstream Media they were “MPPs.” If those were MPPs what happened today was an MPP. All I’m asking for is equality of treatment, fairness, and all the things that are supposed to be the American Way.

Stuart, you are just trying again (in vain) to create a false equivalency, in order to demonstrate (again, in vain) how clever you are. Just give a straight answer for once: do you condone the Republican senators and representatives who have supported Trump in his attempt to undermine the elective process?

          • Avatar
            Stuart I. Anderson says:

I “condone” anyone exercising their constitutional rights to pursue the redress of grievances. Everyone should “condone” citizens of the U. S. exercising their constitutional rights in this manner by simply opining regarding the issues in dispute then sitting back and allowing the procedure for obtaining the redress to unfold until a final decision is rendered. It’s only in the fever swamps of the left were the Senators and Representative so behaving “undermining the elective process.”

What they were doing is exercising their duty as provided for in the constitution. In seeking to deprive them of that ability under the constitution you are doing much more to undermine the constitution then they are doing to undermine the electoral process.

          • Avatar
            Jonathan Swift says:

So Stuart is unable or unwilling to condemn those responsible for what happened at the Capitol. He instead condones the actions of Trump, his unruly mob, and his Republican enablers by falsely claiming they had the constitutional right to attack Congress. Such nuanced thinking.

Christina, our country has been headed on a downhill trajectory ever since 1932 and the Roosevelt administration, interrupted briefly in the early fourties by World War II. The pace has simply accelerated in recent years as it always does when a country is at the end stage of decline and disintegration. To blame it on Trump, who is simply a symptom of this process, is simply ahistorical.

Your claim that “Trump is simply a symptom of this process” of decline is just more republican crap. Trump was/is the leader of the GOP and has been for 4 years and as the lead Liar he has forced the country into chaos. We have a pandemic busting at the seems with over 359,000 Americans dead from his neglect. Today, we witnessed an armed insurrection in our Capitol with encouragement from Trump and support from a large group of conservative republicans. Trump has bankrupted the country morally, financially and in world-wide goodwill. You voted for him and you support all the High heritage scorers that have always worshiped him. As for Mostly Peaceful Protests I am wonderfully nonpartisan and consistent. Law breakers should be put in prison PERIOD. They should get a term in prison for each crime they commit, vandalism, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, riot, etc. etc. That will serve to get people off the street who simply shouldn’t be freely walking around in a free country. More importantly, when they see fellow travelers spending significant time in jail it will cause the only marginally lawless to think again and this mayhem will stop. NO EXCUSES! JUST PRISON!

I was one of the “troops” Cannoneer so perhaps I can clear some confusion up for you. First the mass demonstration at the Capital was overwhelmingly well behaved and peaceful. I was down there most days for hours at an end and the only violence was a broken window at the Capital as I recall. The protest was never out of hand. Traffic moved around Legislative Plaza enhanced by the horn honking protesters. What Marsha, one of the leaders of the anti-tax movement in the State Senate, was calling for was more protesters, more of an outpouring of humanity so more conservative Democrats (an extinct species today) could join with all but eight Republicans in the House as I recall to defeat the tax which they did.

Happily this glorious page from Tennessee history made Marsha a U.S. Senator For Life thanks to her leadership and led to a constitutional amendment prohibiting any new income tax ever again while also leading to the abolition of the hated Hall Income Tax. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Cannoneer, I needed that after Georgia today.

    • Avatar
      Stuart I. Anderson says:

Ken, in a constitutional republic following procedures prescribed by the constitution cannot be called “incendiary” by anyone who is pleased to be living in a constitutional republic. Agreeing with Trump on an issue is not yet an indictable crime. The “fire that’s been set off” was perpetrated by those who engaged in lawlessness and they should pay for their lawless behavior. Other than leaders who overtly preach lawlessness, people who manifest their political views through lawless behavior are responsible for that behavior, not the leading spokesmen for the views themselves.

        • Avatar
          Jonathan Swift says:

What proof do you have that the majority of their constituents want to overturn certain results of an election that has been certified by all states, with no evidence provided to prove the numerous fictional allegations of impropriety? Why should time, effort, and our money be wasted on a commission when courts, up to and including the U.S. Supreme Court, have indicated that the states control the elections, according to the Constitution?

          • Avatar
            Stuart I. Anderson says:

Not conclusive proof certainly but opinion polls report that over 80% of Republicans about 30% of independents don’t have any confidence that this election was conducted fairly and/or election procedures in the U. S. are fair. Other than the two seats representing the two largest liberal ghettos in Tennessee, the seven seats occupied by Republicans are, in fact, overwhelmingly Republican. It is therefore reasonable to assume that our two Republican Senators in this very Republican state and the seven Republican Congressman are behaving exactly the way a good majority of its constituents want them to behave.

You Trumpidians really put on a show yesterday. Talk about going out with a bang! That’s why our two party system endures, “third-party” movements simply attract too many crazies to be effective in the long run.

So what are you going to do for a hobby now that Trumpidianism is for all intents and purposes is dead. I hear the NFL political movement still plays football though I no longer pay any attention. How about them Titans? The Preds should be back on the ice in a few days. Have you tried woodworking? Never found it odd to chant “lock her up” for 5 straight months and then admit that there was no interest in curbing the “Influence for Profit” industry. The list is endless.

Trump is GONE, the only question is how many Trumpidians can be persuaded to have productive political lives as reasonably conservative Republicans.

The greatest losers in all of this are the Trump kids who have political ambitions for themselves as so many reports say they do. While I often blame kids on their parents I never do the reverse so it’s a shame. The greatest winner is Melania who seemed to put on a brave face but I feel she simply wants to go back to the opulent life she came from and doesn’t want a sequel of being First Lady. Republicans didn’t need Trump to win Senate Elections in Georgia. Not until 4 years of Trump did Republicans have a problem winning. The chaos and ill will was a product of Trump ginning up his Grievance Tour.

It’s part of Trump Derangement Syndrome to blame everything that’s wrong or goes bad on Trump. The changing demographics of Georgia partially caused by the Atlanta area being the go-to place for companies fleeing Northern and West Coast liberal states and having their liberal employees in tow is part of the problem. The dissatisfaction with Kemp and Raffensperger because of the way they performed their duties and the failure of Perdue and Loefler to show sufficient sympathy soon enough to Trump’s claims (which shows the political savvy of Marsha and Hagerty) leading to enough Republicans failing to show up lead to the defeat.

In a related topic it is your Trump Derangement Syndrome (“TDS”) that has you advocating that Republican donors to Republican candidates should have refused to donate unless the donee candidate repudiate Trump sometime after the Republican electorate voted in impressive numbers to nominate him. An excellent suggestion if those who abhor the Democrats and what they want to do to this country care to commit political suicide. I’m sorry if you were offended that we declined to take that bizarre suggestion.

Could be that the extreme reaction to our Presidents are a symptom of something eating away at our society. Somehow we are not a country with very happy people anymore and it’s getting worse all the time. Many are using politics as an outlet for their unhappiness that results in the extreme behavior we have witnessed over the past six months. The only surprise in all of this is that it apparently never occurred to our bien pensant that when you rationalize away and fail to punish violence from one side, as they have done all summer, it will lead to violence coming from the other side. Some Republicans didn’t bother to vote, of course. I wouldn’t have voted for any of the main offerings.

Given Atlanta media’s previous investigations into voting by illegal aliens, and the current windfalls presented by expanded absentee balloting, I know the number of ballots that should be thrown out are significant.

One thing I got wrong was my prediction that 2012 would be the last hope of electing a Republican president. We got Trump in 2016. I think he is the last Republican, barring divine or equivalent intervention. Demographic change due largely to mass immigration is erasing the disk and writing over it with its own agenda.
