Democrat Potts won’t run for state House again next year

State Rep. Jason Potts (D-Nashville) won’t seek another term in the General Assembly next year, The Tennesseans Natalie Allison reports. Potts missed 21 of 34 legislative days this session, telling the paper the job doesn’t pay enough, that he wants to spend more time with his young family, and that he was “discriminated against” by the Republican supermajority.

Potts is the second lawmaker to say he won’t be returning next year. Republican Rep. Bruce Griffey of Paris has said he wants to run for a judicial seat or district attorney general in 2022. Several other lawmakers are expected to step aside with redistricting looming.

“I’m not going to run again when I’m discriminated against every day,” Potts told the paper about his inability to get legislation passed.

House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) rejected Potts’ assertion as “utter nonsense.”

“In order to pass legislation, you should be in the General Assembly to actually run a bill,” Sexton said.

Redistricting is a Republican power grab. I cannot believe we as citizens cant be more influential here. The Republicans will use whatever device they can to continue to put good elected persons out of office for more power and money….the whole time voting themselves raises and unlimited trips whereever they want to go. Disgusting. #Bringbackgoodgovernment

He wasn’t there to vote. It’s a safe Democratic district. Get someone besides this piece of shit in there.

This is another reason why folks running for public office need to CAREFULLY consider all aspects of HOLDING the office before announcing their candidacies!

  • And I thought that that’s what Democracy was; the majority wins.
They seem to think it’s fair in Blue states.

yep….no irrational or inconsistent thought going on in Republican heads?!!? Only in Dems. And anyone who speaks the truth, backed by facts, has derangement syndrome. This is the sort of thing that is NOT helpful for those of us who want Rep party to get its act together. And Stuart’s assigning to only Dems the very same behaviors constantly on display by Republicans is not helping us move away form delusion and prevarication.

Whoa, Stuart, hold on. Isn’t it that lying SOB you voted for twice that is still spreading the lie that he actually won the presidential election last year? Even though he lost by the largest majority of any presidential candidate in the history of the United States. So, the majority voted for and elected Biden, so democracy won, like Jackie said. The person getting the most votes wins. So tell us, are you still supporting the Republican lap dogs in congress that are still spreading the big lie that Biden didn’t really win because of some goofy Heritage score card?

David, general elections boil down to two choices and unless you want to be in the nowhere land of third party politics you pick the best choice. Insofar as your friends in the Democratic Party want to continue to move to make this an uninteresting and poorer democratic socialist republic, of course, freedom loving, free market libertarian conservatives will vote Republican whatever shortcomings the Republican candidate may have. You vote for the corrupt demented Big Guy, I vote for Trump, it ain’t pretty but that’s democracy.

Unfortunately, you and the Trumpidians are still focused on the 2020 elections while I’m focused on the 2022 elections. I don’t care what anyone thinks or says about the 2020 elections because it’s DONE, OVER, FINISHED. We need a unified Republican Party, conservatives and Trumpidians arm and arm to lessen the power of the demented Big Guy’s handlers and the leftists in the Democratic Party. In order to achieve that due consideration has to be given rhetorically to the sensitivities of the Trumpidians by conservatives and hopefully conservatives will do so. Picking fights with Trump like that fool Liz Cheney (Heritage-80%) gets us Lisa Stefanak (Heritage-48%) and other bad things that makes me sad.

That’s right, Stuart and the crooked republicans are doing their best to set up a rigged election with all the Gerrymandering in the districts, then passing voter-suppression laws as fast as they can in as many states as they can. Equating Trump and Biden is a pretty far stretch though. Trump actually may be in jail before the next election and certainly a bunch of his former cabinet will be in jail before then along with perhaps hundreds of his Jan. 6 followers. There is no comparison. Trump is a very well known liar, a thief, a white supremist, a crook and I could go on and on. Biden is getting things done even in the midst of the party of NO. His approval ratings keep going UP because the majority of people actually like what he is doing for the country. The republicans are tied up with doing NOTHING, except organizing the “Chaney Circular Firing Squad” that will only divide the party further.

What is Biden getting done? Gas prices are up, the stock market is down, his foreign policy is in disarray. I will give him credit for creating a crisis on the southern border. Keep tracking those poll numbers.

          • Avatar
            MARLE says:

You already had people telling you why gas prices are up from a year ago when no one was driving and they were drilling so much oil that they ran out of storage space…or have you conveniently forgotten all of that. When supply exceeds demand prices go Down. Now demand has picked up.

The Stock market has been on a 25% increase since Biden’s election. The market has corrections as part of a normal cycle. Usually 10% which at the moment we have not yet reached.

Republican conservatives LOSE when people like you blame things the FACTS can’t support on the President. I never faulted Trump without the facts being on my side.
You are hurting the conservative cause. Fault Biden for the Immigration mess’; he deserves it. Fault him for saying that the Barely Rich don’t pay their fair share of taxes; he’s wrong about that~ it’s the Uber Rich, like Trump, who don’t pay for the costs of our annual budget. Fault him for the continued misrepresentation of Covid risk; he’s on the wrong side of that at the point where vaccinations are possible.

Try blaming him for things you can back up with facts.

I don’t know why you insist on referring to Biden as “the corrupt demented Big Guy” That’s really rich seeing as how you voted twice for the only President in American history to be impeached twice and it’s looking now if his crooked lap dog Attorney General Barr had not lied about the Mueller Report, your guy would have added an obstruction of justice count to his impeachment papers. And to accuse Biden of being corrupt while you support that crook Trump! And get ready, odds are your “demented” party will nominate that Loser again so you will get to vote for the idiot a third time. That thought must make you proud. And talk about demented–have you ever watched the montage that documents the number of times Trump stumbled over his words trying to make a complete sentence. You claim, because of the system, that you were “forced” to vote for the “best choice” who happened to be Trump. Yet, you also claim to be a conservative but there was never anything Trump did that was conservative. You cannot rise above partisanship for the good of this country, and that is truly sad.

David, you’re so anxious to score points in some game your playing that you don’t seem to absorb what other people are saying. Soooooo, once again. . .as you know Trump is only my guy because he is preferable to the leftists that dominate the Democratic Party. That was true in 2016, again in 2020 and I have every confidence it will be true in 2024. The fact that I chose the best man in a two flawed men race doesn’t morally foreclose me from criticizing the other 330+ million people in this country included the demented Big Guy.

Hopefully the best First Lady in our history will convince Trump not to run. Understandably as a leftist you hope he does run because he gives whatever specimen the Democrats nominate the best chance of winning. Republicans made a terrible mistake in 2016, I have no doubt they can do it again in 2024. Trump is not a conservative, you are correct, that’s why I spent a lot of money trying to nominate Ted Cruz. Despite my be efforts Cruz lost. I had no intention of going to nowhere land and vote third party so I voted Republican for Trump. Not hard to understand. That’s what most people who support the loser in primaries do, they end up voting for the winner of that primary. Why you are confounded by that is a mystery to me. In the meantime, my immediate concern are the 2022 Republican primaries and my goal to move the Republican Party RIGHTWARD, RIGHTWARD, RESOLUTELY RIGHTWARD.

Actually Taxpayer more often than not I have to vote for Republicans that are too tepid rather than what a lefty like you would call “right-wing-nuts” and insofar as there are only two parties and the Democratic Party is out of the question to a libertarian conservative like myself I have decided to move the Republican Party RIGHTWARD, RIGHTWARD, RESOLUTELY RIGHTWARD. If the American people keep electing leftists and the leftists in this country continue to become more and more totalitarian in their intolerance toward beliefs they do not share, one of these days I better make sense and gain the approval of the appropriate leftist bureaucrat or else, but happily that day is not here just yet.

“Never anything Trump did that was conservative .” I don’t know what alternative universe you, Stuart, and some others live in. Trump governed as one of the most conservative presidents we have ever had. That is why you and others on the left can’t stand him. That is why a Democratic House of Representatives impeached him. That is why many of the most conservative Republicans like him. That is why so many “tepid “ Republicans don’t like him. He was not a politician, nor politically correct. That is a problem for some in the Republican Party. But don’t believe the lie that Trump supporters are not true conservatives.

I don’t like Trump because he is a lazy, uninformed, narcissistic blowhard, otherwise he is one hell of a guy.

But WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE! If he gets the nomination unquestionably I will vote for him, but the Republicans can do so much better than him and I hope they do. Right now, I’m focused on the 2022 elections and the Republicans recapturing at least the House while conservatives win 2022 Republican primaries.

if Repubs can do much better what will you say when they don’t? You and I both know that the nomination is Trump’s if he wants it which means that Republicans are not interested in doing better; they are interested in doing what Trump wants. Can they do much better than Sefanik in leadership?

Not only does the staff read the bills, they are usually written by lobbyists and their masters and then tell the member how to vote.

Remember when Sen. Dorker said the 2017 tax bill was so big that he only read a summary—and somehow missed the fact that he made a big chunk of money off the bill?

The Republican and Conservatives in the country have nailed themselves into a corner, I believe, when they gave up all common sense and just surrendered to Trump and his crooked entourage. The vote today to expel Liz Chaney was an event that they will regret for years to come. The party was already fighting against all the different groups but that vote today capped it off. The split in the party will grow, the moderates will move away from the Trump supporters and the dregs that are left will drag the party even further down into the political abyss. And then the other big news of the day about the GOP favorite NRA gang bankruptcy court case being dismissed just added more problems and bad press for the RIGHTWARD, RIGHTWARD, ALWAYS RIGHTWARD CROWD!!
