Dean latest gubernatorial candidate to release tax info

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Karl Dean and his wife had $19.2 million in taxable income from 2013 to 2016, reports The Tennessean  after he provided a tax summary statement.

Last year alone, Dean and his wife, Delta Anne Davis, who works for the Southern Environmental Law Center, earned nearly $2.7 million.

The release from the former Nashville mayor — after declining to do so during an initial request of all seven gubernatorial candidates — provides additional insight into the wealth of the numerous candidates in the 2018 Tennessee governor’s race.

Dean’s earnings for 2016 fall between U.S. Rep. Diane Black, R-Tennessee, and two other candidates in the race. 

Last year Black and her husband earned $7.2 million, while House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, and her spouse made $301,000.  The Blacks earned $78.6 million and the Harwells earned $1.5 million between 2013 and 2016.

House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh — the only other Democrat in the race — and his wife made $313,000 in 2016. The total amount the Fitzhughs made between 2013 and 2016 is not known.

After Dean’s release, three Republicans — Knoxville entrepreneur Randy Boyd, Williamson County businessman Bill Lee and former state Sen. Mae Beavers — are the only top-tier candidates still not to provide documents showing how much they earned since 2013.
