Collierville school board member wins GOP nomination in House District 95

Collierville Schools board member Kevin Vaughan won the Republican primary election for state House District 95 by 49 votes over former Germantown alderman Frank Uhlhorn, reports the Memphis Daily News.

The unofficial results show Collierville alderman Bill Patton running third in the seven candidate contest. (Vaughan had 1,066 votes; Uhlhorn 1,017. Full results on Shelby County Election Commission website, HERE.)

… Vaughan advances to the June 15 special general election in the district where he will meet Democratic nominee Julie Byrd Ashworth, who ran unopposed in Thursday’s primary election, and independent contenders Robert Schutt and Jim Tomasik.

Vaughan, of Collierville, is owner of Township Development Services and Township Realty Services. He is a professional engineer and a real estate broker. He is a charter member of the Collierville Schools board, elected in 2014 to Position 1 on the board. Vaughan has also served on appointed town boards and commissions including the long range land use planning committee.

State and local Republican party leaders have urged Republicans in District 95 to take the race in the heavily Republican district seriously. They expect Democrats to make a show of force at the polls in the general election to gauge sentiment locally around the Trump presidency. And Democrats succeeded in gaining a seat in the Shelby County delegation to the Legislature last year with Democrat Dwayne Thompson’s upset victory over Republican incumbent Steve McManus in state House district 96.
