Bredesen discusses Trump in second TV ad

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Phil Bredesen has released his second ad in which he discusses his feelings about President Donald Trump.

Look, I’m not running against Donald Trump,” Bredesen says in the spot, pledging to support the president’s initiatives when they’re good for the state, and to oppose them when they’re not.

“I think that’s what senators ought to do,” the former governor says.

That’s a more qualified approach than Republican U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s blanket statements of support for the president.

Here’s a transcript of the ad:

“I’m Phil Bredesen and I approved this message. Look, I’m not running against Donald Trump. I’m running for a Senate seat to represent the people of Tennessee. I learned a long time ago to separate the message from the messenger. There’s a lot of things I don’t personally like about Donald Trump, but he’s the president of the United States and if he has an idea, and is pushing some things that I think are good for the people of Tennessee, I’m going be for it. It doesn’t matter where it came from. And likewise, if I think it’s not going to be good for Tennessee, I’m going to be against it. I think that’s what senators ought to do.”
