Vote clears way for Nashville soccer stadium

The Nashville Metro Council has cleared the way for the construction of a Major League Soccer stadium. The Tennessean reports that a 31-8 vote to demolish existing structures at the state fairgrounds site was key to allowing the $275 million project to proceed (the measure required a two-thirds majority, or 27 votes).

A statement from Mayor David Briley:

I applaud the Council for its final approval of legislation to bring Major League Soccer to Nashville. This project will have a positive and lasting impact on our entire community. It embraces growth and new opportunities while ensuring every resident benefits and thrives along with it.

This project will provide needed upgrades to the Fairgrounds, essential affordable housing, broad minority business opportunities and increased safety protections for our workers.

This project will improve the Fairgrounds facilities but it will not change our customs or the activities we cherish. I pledge to all of those engaged in these discussions over the past months that I am listening. Together we will build on the years of community tradition at our Fairgrounds and I look forward to continuing to work closely with you as this project moves forward.

There is no room for a state fair now. You’re crazy

Hate giving money away to billionaires. I think all should be 100% privately financed. But this seems to be one of the most measured, reasonable stadium deals that I have seen. Could have been much worse.

Probably a good move for the future of Nashville and maintaining its status as a “major league” city. Soccer is hugely favored among younger generations. Millennials starting to hit their 30’s with more disposable income. Going to be more important to have an MLS team than an NHL team in the next decade. Will probably eventually take over baseball as well. Really like that they decided to put this at the Fairgrounds as well. Will revitalize that neighborhood in a lot of the same ways that the baseball stadium has grown Germantown.

How about a major league Baseball team? I would put that way before a soccer stadium.

Nashville probably can’t support a baseball team. To be successful, you need to put 40,000 butts in seats essentially every other night for 6 months straight. The Sounds are the perfect size for the area where a lot of people have already developed MLB allegiances to the Braves and others.

Also, baseball is in for a rude awakening in the next generation. I love it, but there are a lot of younger people who really don’t seem to like it.

It’s soccer and Islam from here on out. Females be careful.

If we sell the Parthenon/Centennial Park property to a group of local developers, it would make a fine Major League Baseball facility!

  • Donna Locke says:

    This entire thing is tragic.
