Gov. Bill Haslam’s office has announced how it will allocate $35 million in school security funding across the state. About $10 million of the money is in the form of recurring funding, while $25 million is in the form of one-time grants.

“We have made security for children at our schools a priority, so there was an urgency to have all schools assessed and the funding allocated to increase school safety as we started the school year,” Haslam said in a release.

The grants will allow school districts to make various security enhancements, including better door locks, improved visitor screening procedures and shatter-resistant glass. Some districts are using grants to improve mental health services for students and to pay for school counselors and child psychologists. Additional local funding has led to 213 new school resource officers to be hired around the state.

Here’s a breakdown of how the money is being allocated:

….and the amount allocated for metal detectors? armed security? The choice for all teachers and admin to conceal carry with certified training and education if they choose to?

Too bad the NRA, its affiliates, and the gun industry are not paying for this. As with the other costs of gun proliferation (gun death, gun injury, law enforcement fears, etc.), TN taxpayers are paying out the nose for measures which are likely to be mostly ineffective. Business calls these costs externalities, that is, society pays, the business does not.

How much tragedy and how much spending/subsidy are we willing to put up with?

Children’s safety is so very important. Too bad the learning environment must now be filled with fear due to gun proliferation. I am glad that I am not a child growing up and trying to learn in such an environment! In my opinion, we have the NRA and its associated groups to thank for this, along with policy makers who are afraid of them. Bullying has been effective for the NRA and TFA and etc. to date.
