Hagerty goes negative on Sethi over $50 donation in 2008

U.S. Senate candidate Bill Hagerty is attacking GOP rival in a new TV ad over a $50 donation made a dozen years ago. The spot running in West Tennessee says Sethi gave to an organization that is directing money to violent protesters around the country.

“Sethi has donated to the organization that has bankrolled these rioters, aiding liberal extremists,” Joseph James, a veteran from Hendersonville, says in the spot. “Tennessee deserves a senator who respects our sacrifices and honors our flag. That is why I support Bill Hagerty. ”

The organization in question is ActBlue, an online fundraiser for liberal candidates and causes. ActBlue has seen a flood of donations pour in amid the Black Lives Matter protests around the country, according to the New York Times.

Sethi gave $50 through the group in 2008 to support Virginia congressional candidate Tom Perriello, a Democrat who narrowly defeated inclubmetn Republican Rep. Virgil Goode. Sethi has since made $33,584 in GOP contributions, including to Rick Perry, Bob Corker, Marsha Blackburn, Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Donald Trump.

So how long will be it be until the Sethi camp hits back with a spot about Hagerty once giving $1,000 to Al Gore?

UPDATE: Looks like the Sethi campaign was ready for attack ads:

UPDATE II: Here’s a response from the Hagerty campaign:

Of course, Bill worked to defeat Barack Obama in 2012, unlike Massachusetts Manny Sethi who applied to be in the Obama Biden White House. Manny Sethi’s Never Trumpers have been attacking Bill since the day President Trump endorsed and announced his run for Senate. President Trump looked at all the candidates in this race, and he endorsed Bill because he trusts Bill to stand with him to protect conservative values, get our economy going again, hold China accountable, and stand up for life.

Sethi was a finalist for a prestigious White House Fellowship in 2009, when Obama was president. The fellowships are “awarded on a strictly non-partisan basis,” according to the White House. Hagerty was a White House fellow in 1991, when Republican George H.W. Bush was president.

  • Not that Stuart guy says:

Wow, that’s a pretty misleading ad, even by TN GOP primary standards. Hagerty has it in the bag and will be the next US Senator from Tennessee. Whether that is a good thing or not is open for debate, but the likelihood of any other outcome is pretty slim.

  • John says:

William Francis Hagerty IV gave a lot more than $50 to Al Gore and Never Trumpers Mitt Romney and Bill Haslam.

  • Zach Wamp says:

Stuart- not sure where you get your information but I know a lot of people who would like to make a wager with you on the outcome of this race.

    • John says:

Spoken from a true Conservative Patriot. Stuart could learn a lesson from you, but I think he’s secretly a Common Core Romney type RINO.

    • Stuart I. Anderson says:

Unfortunately, Zach appears to be right. The last poll I saw had Chairman Manny only 3% behind so his resounding defeat that I was so hoping for seems unlikely. Only a resounding defeat would make the needed impression that you can’t do as little as The Chairman has done for the conservative movement then show up and run as this blood and guts conservative zealot when you decide to buy yourself a seat to high office like the U.S. Senate.

Unfortunately, too many conservatives are still suckers for well crafted campaign ads and have an aversion to voting for candidates who scream Boston Consulting/Republican Establishment as soon as they walk through the door. If they only had my vision the conservative movement would be in better shape than it’s in today.

      • John says:

Stuart Anderson here proclaiming he is better suited to lead conservatives than Zach Wamp. Stuart get your Fauci mask back on and go harvest some more votes for Romney/Hagerty. You’re going to need them.

      • Mark Rogers says:

Stuart, so the logic of your argument is that Manny is disgualified from running for Senate because he was busy building a non profit that helped inprove the health and lives of poor Tennesseans in the time he wasn’t working as a surgeon? Really? Are you that deranged?

And you are willing to forgive Hagerty’s $1000 donation to elect Al Gore President? What a great guy you are. What a principled conservative role model you are.

        • Stuart I. Anderson says:

OK Mark let’s try it one more time. There is no proven conservative running for U. S. Senate from Tennessee in 2020. Conservatives should, however, show up to vote in order to salvage what little good they can out of this election.

One of the problems conservatives have is that their candidates are almost always underfunded compared to the Chamber of Commerce shills they run against. This is partly do to the Chairman Mannys of the world, who allegedly are simply bursting with conservative zeal when running for office, do almost nothing to help the conservative movement in civilian life. The candidacy of Chairman Manny presents a wonderful opportunity for conservatives to say “Enough, we won’t put up with this anymore”! by voting AGAINST The Chairman by voting FOR Hagerty.

      • LeeAnn C. says:

Oh don’t give up, Stuart. I’m seeing a lot of people taking another look at the substance of the campaigns and they’re coming up empty when they look at ‘the Chairman’. And they’re right. He’s just an empty suit.

        • John says:

And Hagerty has used his money and influence to support BLM.

          • LeeAnn C. says:

Ridiculous accusation. Check out Kroger and see if you’re not supporting BLM. All this virtue signaling has impacted many corporations.

    • amen Zach Bill Hagerty is a sharial lover .. we experienced it in 2014 at the Tampa
Republican convention when Bill Hagerty went totally crazy and insulted a woman who dared confronting him with Sharia law …..

  • James White says:

    Battle Stations !
Deep State Hagerty is feeling the Burn !

  • Kb says:

It is going to be close.

  • James White says:

Virgil Goode ! I voted for Him for President in the Constitution Party ! He lost. 🙁 😈

    • Stuart I. Anderson says:

Funny that Chairman Manny, a very wealthy man who had about a $2, 800 annual interest in politics before deciding that he wants to be a U.S. Senator, was moved to contribute a few pittance to the OPPONENT of an individual who is so conservative so as to gain the nomination of the Constitution Party. Maybe Rambo conservative Manny was confused as he was when he contributed to Corker. Conservatives can only imagine what confusion awaits if we are foolish enough to send this political dilettante to the U.S. Senate.

      • LeeAnn C. says:

And then supporting a challenger, Grant Starrett, to oppose Dr. Scott DesJarlais. Doesn’t DesJarlais score well in those conservative stats you track?

        • Stuart I. Anderson says:

Scott DesJarlais (Heritage-87%) is a conservative dreamboat! That 87% understates his present day wonderulness. His score would even be higher if he didn’t start off in office a little shaky, too much go along get along tepid conservative stuff. Over the past few years he has been a proud member of the House Freedom Caucus, along with my own beloved Mark Green, and his current session 98% is the type of score we have grown to expect from the latter day Scott DesJarlais.

  • Charles says:

We need one US Senator who is a Democrat so that there will be representation for the reasonable people in Tennessee.

  • Stuart I. Anderson says:

OK, political junkies get your abacus out and let’s do a quick calculation. Since 2008 Chairman Manny made $33,584 in political contributions. So over twelve years Dr. “CONSERVATIVE-OUTSIDER” who has just given his own campaign at least $1.5 million has made about $2,800 in contributions a year. Take out the inexplicable Corker contribution and you have even less than that. So this is the political dilettante so many of you conservatives want to reward with a U. S. Senate seat as he steps out of the operating room at Vandy hospital. That’s a shame!

  • LeeAnn C. says:

The truth hurts. Dr. M has been flying under the radar with his claims of being a conservative without any substance whatsoever. It’s not the amount of the contribution that’s the issue. It’s the question of who is the real Dr. M? The guy that supported Grant Starrett to challenge proven conservative Dr. Scott DesJarlais? The guy that DIDN’T give a dime to Joe Carr to challenge Lamar Alexander? The guy that says he supports President Trump, but DIDN’T give a dime to the President’s campaign until months after starting his Senate campaign? The guy that’s silent about who he supported in the Republican primary? The guy that hired campaign staff for now mayor Democrat Cooper against conservative REPUBLICAN champion, Carol Swain? The guy that hired campaign staff for weak-kneed Bill Lee that has now given us refugee resettlement and destroyed the state’s healthy economy with executive orders ad nauseum? Who is Dr. M and what does he really stand for? Check out Carol Swain’s article that came out today. She pretty much nails it and endorses Bill Hagerty. Don’t fall for the bag of campaign tricks that is propping up Dr. M. He’s an empty suit and we don’t need that in DC.

    • Kb says:

      Great points LeeAnn.

    • TC says:

You’re my new hero..I wish more people would look beyond the American Idol campaigns to the men behind them.

    • Mark Rogers says:

LeeAnn, the Truth that matters is that the Hagerty campaign is running scared. Otherwise why wait until the day before early voting to drop an ad on a minor donation that the camapign knew about formonths months?

The only reason to wait so late is that the Hagerty people knew it was a minor story but ita all they have. The stench of desperation and fear from Team Hagerty is clear. I was in Maury County earlier this week and it was clear that the majority of Hagerty support was from the 30 plus staffers they brought down. Manny clearly had the vast majority of voters.

Going negative so late and with so little is a clear sign that Hagerty is losing. If the campaign had anything important, they would have brought it out earlier. This is panic, nothing more.

      • LeeAnn C. says:

It’s not all they have. It’s what they dropped in one area of the state. And as for negativity, it’s pretty tame. The other meaningful item in the ad is the speaker, a veteran. People in TN love their veterans, so they’ve done a great job blending the message. Hagerty will win.

      • mark johnson says:

running scared even you know that not true.
If Hagerty was than he should not be running.
i dont know truth about any beside their records .
but Tennessee need someone that not afraid to stand up solve a problem if they see it.
like sending in troops if we have looter and people destory stuff.and knnow we are a bible belt state…

    • James White says:

“conservative REPUBLICAN champion, Carol Swain” Nope, Islamphobe if I ever saw one. She may be Republican, but she ain’t conservative.

      • Eddie White says:

Wrong James and Marle. Conservatives oppose radical Islam. Carol Swain is a strong conservative, would have been a great mayor of Nashville.

        • James White says:

There is a difference between Radical and Islamaphobe. She obviously would have been and may still be an Awful Mayor.

        • MARLE says:

I thought you were a big pro life person, Eddie. Do you like people who tell others NOT to have an abortion but have one themselves. How about people who are Pro-police now but agitated to get police mandated into Sensitivity Training? You need to read Carol’s own biography. She spent the better part of 20 years during her tenure at Harvard and the years leading up to that a Very Different person who laid a foundation in this country that has brought us to where we are today. Now, of course, she is singing a different tune but the beliefs and attitudes she stood for for decades have gotten this country into a big mess.

          Read her own biography.

    • MARLE says:

Carol Swain has no record. But she has a lot of “on the record” comments across a variety of subject matters that brought her candidacy into question for many voters, the conservative republicans among them.

  • I still can’t see why the Bureau of Land Management is so important.

  • Molly Mann says:

    Red on Red

  • Donna Locke says:

Well, you know, why doesn’t Sethi explain why he targeted one of the strongest immigration controllers in Congress?

Why do none of them ever explain much of anything at all?

I could not be less enthusiastic about this entire election.

  • John says:

That update is the saddest thing I’ve seen. Massachusetts Manni? Where was Never Trumper Mitt Romney governor? Manny is backed by Never Trumpers? Hagerty has given them hundreds of thousands. And just ignore the Al Gore donation. Did LeeAnn or Stuart write that response?

    • Beatrice Shaw says:

Al Gore is a FANTASTIC historian and leader. He knows what has happened to past civilizations with global climate change and is trying to save this one. I’m proud to ride roads and see signs honoring this fine man in Tennessee. He should have been President-then all this mess we are in would have never happened.

      • mark johnson says:

Al Gore lol should have been President-then all this mess we are in would have never happened.
than you fail to see the real problem and fail to see he not a problem solver. over something as big global climate change.
you need someone who know when something working and something not working ( when it a man made problem) .
not someone who going to make a bunch rule and hope they magical work.
Al Gore never show he would be a strong leader over something big as united state.
i for one glade he never made it. Al Gore been good for ca government.

These odd pingback links looks like phishing attempts by the Hagerty campaign. No worries, Bill. The only campaign personnel here are the Hagerty interns Stuart and LeeAnn.

    • Stuart I. Anderson says:

John, read that response back to yourself slowly. See, it makes no sense at all. I think the problem must arise when you attempt multi-sentence responses where one sentence has to bear some rational relationship to the preceding sentence. Perhaps short, one sentence responses “spitball” responses is the medium that brings out the maximum depth of your thinking.

  • Cannoneer2 says:

Whatever happens, I hope Hagerty drops the “I’m wearing blue jeans, I’m a man of the people” shtick in any future commercials!

    • Stuart I. Anderson says:

I don’t think people as well informed as almost everyone who participates in this forum should take stupid campaign ads seriously in the first place. These ads are for low information voters in order to motivate them to make an uninformed vote.

I know how candidate’s playacting in campaign commercials trying to convince the voters they are something they are not can be annoying. I have been complaining about Chairman Manny playacting that he is a “CONSERVATIVE-OUTSIDER” in both print and broadcast media when he obviously is neither is insulting the intelligence of anyone who knows The Chairman’s anemic political record but to no avail. Only a few more weeks of this nonsense to go Cannonneer.

      • Cannoneer2 says:

I have a lot to do both at work and home, but sometimes these ads are hard to avoid! Dr. Manny closes one ad by saying “That’s why I’m runnin'”. I’ll bet that’s the only time he drops end consonants! Like you say, only a few more weeks!

        • Stuart I. Anderson says:

Cannoneer, your such a skeptic. That’s simply the way you end up speaking after graduating from the Webb School, Brown University and Harvard Medical School or perhaps he picked it up as a Fulbright Scholar working in Tunisia.

  • James White says:

I see Rand Paul is supporting Dr. Manny. This is Good News !

    • Stuart I. Anderson says:

So I believe did Jim DeMint. I can understand why conservatives would support Chairman Manny because someone like Hagerty who I have referred to as the candidate from Republican Establishment’s Central Casting is someone conservatives instinctively oppose as well they should. The only problem is that in this race Chairman Manny should be regarded as even more unacceptable for the long term welfare of the conservative movement.

No one with absolutely no record of any close association with any conservative candidate or cause who suddenly turns up running for one of the highest offices in the land as a conservative zealot should receive conservative support EVER! The Chairman’s tiny political record shows only that he is a schmoozer with members of the Republican Establishment so other than Chris Devaney’s orchestrated campaign there is no reason whatsoever to believe that Chairman Manny is a any more conservative than his opponent. Manny is simply running a more ostentatiously fraudulent campaign. That’s why conservatives should vote AGAINST Chairman Manny by voting FOR Hagerty.

      • John says:

Take your Common Core Marxist agenda elsewhere. You and Hagerty are not welcome in the Conservative movement. Rand Paul, Jim DeMint, Zach Wamp are right. You, Romney, Haslam, Al Gore, and Hagerty are wrong.

        • Beatrice Shaw says:

You are crazy!! Al Gore wrong?!? About what? Everything he has said has come to pass with climate change, technology and Republicans corrupting the country. Seriously….what has he done that is so bad?

          • Eve king says:

Absolutely nothing Al Gore predicted has come true. Please do your research before making ridiculous statements. You have apparently been brain washed by CNN, and the like. You really don’t even know what old Al’s predictions were as you haven’t even read for yourself his outlandish statements. Seems you are content to live in a make believe world.

      • Michael Middleton says:

Why do you call him “Chairman Manny”.

  • **YAWN**

  • I thought Carol Swain opposes Common Core. SMH. I’ll never fail to be surprised by people who say one thing and do another
